Driving in Maryland.

You can also head across the Chesapeake Bay Bridge, enjoying spectacular views of the tidal wetlands which can claim to be the largest estuary in the United States. The Chesapeake Bay Bridge, which connects Maryland`s Eastern and Western Shores, is the most popular route for tourists to reach the resort town of Ocean City. Or you could drive along the 65 miles of shoreline of Maryland`s largest freshwater lake, Deep Creek Lake.

 

The state of Maryland has designated 19 byways that can take you along 2,487 miles of scenic roads, showcasing the unique flavour of Maryland`s natural beauty, history and culture. If you choose to take the backrounds you can find four brand new byways featuring nationally significant themes set up for visitors of the state: the Star-Spangled Banner, Antietam Campaign, Booth`s Escape and the Mason and Dixon byways. With easy-to-follow road logos installed on the byways, you can let the state of Maryland take you on its very own guided tour.

Maryland operates a huge number of welcome centers and rest areas at major gateways and tourist regions and locations across the state. The majority of these are conveniently located on Interstate and Primary highways and provide modern restroom facilities, travel information and vending machines. Across Maryland there are also roughly 65 family picnic areas and overlooks which can boast enchanting views, minor rest areas and county operated welcome centers which are perfect for a short break on a long, scenic drive. All these rest areas are located on the Maryland Official Highway Map, which you will be able to find at any welcome center across the state.
